Many people are drawn to the pug dog breed, but do not take adequate steps to ensure pug dog health. This breed has long been recognized as an official breed, and became a member of the AKC Toy group in 1885. The Pug is easily recognizable because of its flat and wrinkly face, its thickset body, and a tiny curly tail. A Pug should be anywhere from 13 to 20 pounds and stand at a height of 10 to 14 inches. There is no denying the adorable nature of these small dogs, but their size and skin often lead to very unique health concerns that an owner has to be aware of.

The first major source of infection is the dog’s adorable wrinkly skin so a veterinarian should be consulted at the first sign of infection. Because of the propensity towards infection, you should always bathe and clean your pet regularly, especially between the wrinkles of skin.

Another factor which could cause pug dog health problems is its eyes. A Pug’s face is generally the cause of many eyesight problems, caused by the special shape and location of that part of the body. Regularly checking should alert you to any immediate inflammation in the eye, which is a sign to get your dog to the vet right away.

A common ailment among many of the Pug breed is eating more food than they need. Watch your pet’s food intake carefully to keep him at a healthy weight – being overweight could adversely affect a pet’s health as much as it would a person’s. Pugs do not handle heat well, and should never be left in a locked car or left in the sun outside without shade. Never leave the breed in high heat for very long, because this will cause the dog to have difficulty in breathing.

Like with any dog, proper care and vet visits are the keys to pug dog health. These adorable little dogs will provide many years of happiness for the companions that take care of them responsible.
